Washing/Styling your hair extensions

  • If you have had tape applied, do not wash hair for at least 48 hours (Ideally 72hhrs) and for pre-bonded glue, don't wash for 72 hours - to allow the bonds to fully set

    • Dry shampoo may be used for this period, avoiding the bonds.

  • Remove all tangles with a specialist hair extension brush first before washing your hair.

  • Use a specialist hair extensions shampoo & conditioner - Sulphate free is essential. Hair extension bonds can be broken down by very strong chemicals that are contained in some commercial shampoos.

  • Tape Wearers need to ensure you are not having hot showers/prolonged shower. The heat/steam will affect the stickiness of the tape reducing the lifespan on the tape tabs.

  • Wash hair in the shower with the head straight/tilted back – do not put your head forwards over a bath/basin to wash

  • Apply shampoo to bonds only; Lift the hair & apply soap suds throughout rows & to nape area.

  • Rinse thoroughly - if you don't, you will get product build up damaging your extensions and making your head itchy.

  • Apply conditioner to the mid length down only – do not apply to the bonds as they can cause them to slip/break down the bond.

  • After washing, avoid rolling or rubbing the hair, instead gently squeeze out the excess water and pat dry with a towel.

  • Then apply any oils and heat protector mid to ends (again avoid the bonds)

  • Dry your hair immediately after it is washed focusing on the bonds first. Dry until its 100% dry!

The longer the bonds are wet for, the softer they can become and may slip.

If wet for long periods of time, the lifespan of the bonds may be reduced.

Wet is a breeding ground for mould in the bonds.

  • Use a medium heat hair dryer setting as this will cause the bonds to remain intact when drying and where possible use a temp setting of 170oC on styling tools.

  • Use a conditioning mask such as Olaplex No3 every 10-14 days.

  • Do not leave any conditioner or similar leave-in products in your hair overnight.

  • Do not go to bed with wet hair as it may tangle & will cause the extensions to slip

Brushing/Styling your hair extensions

  • Always use a hair extension specialist brush/tangle tamer on your hair extensions.

  • You should start to brush your hair from the bottom then move up towards the top of the head to the root area.

  • When brushing extensions, always support them with one hand. Over vigorous brushing will cause breakage.

  • Separate extensions regularly so matting does not occur. This can be done when the hair is wet or dry. Separate each bond from its partner all the way along the rows, horizontally & vertically using your fingers are a comb. Do this each time you wash your hair and throughout the day.

This prevents the hairs crossing over and tangling in the naturally shed trapped hair - it takes a few mins a

       day and will stop matting.

PS. Matting is damaging to natural hair and £40+ to remove!

If you notice a problem, get in touch ASAP rather than avoiding!

  • If a tangle occurs, use detangling spray and tease the tangle/knot you gently to avoid affecting the bond pulling the natural hair.

Colouring your hair

  • Any colouring/perming of your own hair should be done around 2 weeks prior to the application of bonds.

  • Once extensions have been fitted you may colour around your own hairline and on the roots of the parting. Do not allow solution to get on extension especially the bond

  • Whilst Colouring of hair extensions is not recommended, if you do this will be at your own risk. Avoid dye on the roots and always do a strand test – whilst this is real hair it may dye at a different rate to your own hair.

Other useful information

  • Always tie hair back when swimming, sunbathing, sleeping and taking part in sports. We recommend putting your hair into a plait to keep cuticles from rubbing together and causing friction.

  • If wearing tight head gear (i.e. horse riding, motorbike) you may experience softening and flattening of the bonds.

  • Brush your hair before bed and tie into a side plait / low pony to sleep. If you sleep with your hair loose, there is a high risk of it becoming matted.

  • Expect some discomfort for the first 2 weeks or so. Your scalp needs to get used to the extra weight of hair that has been applied.

  • An itchy scalp signifies you are using the wrong products, products have not rinsed out thoroughly, or that your scalp is getting used to the extra weight attached to your hair.

  • In very rare, extreme cases, 1 in 50,000 clients have experienced a small amount of hair loss because their hair roots were too weak to support the bond. Unfortunately this cannot be determined until you wear the extensions. It is extremely rare that this happens but must be taken into consideration.

  • You will experience some shedding and you may lose some extensions, but do not worry this is quite normal. You may lose 5-20 extensions strands (keep them!) depending on how carefully you treat them.
